The symbols signify either married, single, widow, protestant, or catholic (square) plus area of the country. This necklace belonged to a married protestant woman from an area known as Walcheren. These treasured heirloom necklaces were normally passed on to the eldest daughter and they rarely leave families. This necklace that came from an estate in New Orleans. This beautiful, unique, and very rare 16 and 1/2" necklace combines innovative and very unusual composite. Sassy says she believes it is made up of crushed and pressed ivory. Then, each bead was enameled red. Following that, each one was machine or hand cut into the underlying ivory in an elaborate design so that the ivory appears in the crevaces. Not one bead is exactly like the next making her believe it is partly hand made and partly machine made... very interesting and unbelievably gorgeous!! Each very large 15mm bead has 10 sections. Cut design elements are delicate and symmetrical at once, making this a smashing, fun piece with real integrity of design, sure to attract first glances -- and this is what we really want isn't it? -- longer looks. Circa 1930s, the necklace has red solid enamel slightly hidden on each side of the beads to magnify the red color overlays.
